The Best Photo Ever

When I first got into photography, film was still the primary medium. Digital photography was starting, and only pro photographers had digital cameras that can take descent pictures. I remember using rolls of film to take photos of a venti Starbucks hibiscus iced tea. I placed the cup on a bed of green grass and thought it was the best composition ever. The iced tea was a striking red color with beads of condensation forming on the transparent plastic cup set against the vibrant green grass with the Starbucks green straw completing the look. A lot of things were new to me - having my own camera (and an SLR at that!), Starbucks just opened in the Philippines and taking photos just for the fun of it. The photographs taken that day are stored somewhere saved by a younger me for my older self to reminisce as one does upon reaching a particular decade. But on a warm Saturday in August, I didn’t need to have those photos to remember. I was walking around my neighborhood, taking pictures using my iPhone. One hand was holding a giant cup of Starbucks guava iced tea and the other hand holding my iPhone attached to a handle grip. Taking sips of my iced tea in between taking photos, the memory of that afternoon almost two decades ago made me smile. I take a picture of my pink iced tea set against the purplish-pink metallic exterior of the Museum of Pop for posterity. This time I don’t think its the best composition. Instead I reflect that after the years that have passed, the change from film to digital and the many places I have called home I am still taking photos just for the fun of it.

Still

A photo of a wildflower taken from the Satsop Nuclear site. It is the kind that grows between the cracks of the pavement. Just enough opening for some dirt to fill the cracks then something grows like weeds, dandelions and wildflowers. It breaks the monotony of the pavement as if signaling its not all gray around here. Sometimes when one is lucky, the sun shines but not directly to the flower, the air is still and one gets to take a perfect photo of a wildflower.
